Today we’ll be having a birthday celebration of a very successful entertainer in the popular music field, and that’s Frank Sinatra, who was born on December 12, 1915. During his time Frank Sinatra was one of the most important and enduring popular music figures of the 20th century. His career spanned six decades, beginning in the 1930s and lasting into the 90s. He weathered all kinds of trends in popular music, defining some of them and maintaining his appeal throughout the others. His voice was particularly noted for its intimacy and direct appeal to the listener that proved impossible to resist. Perhaps what he is known for best is his unique talent for phrasing and interpretation and his ability to perform songs in a way that made them, quite literally, perennial.

Following on from last week’s show featuring jazz pianists, on today’s program we showcase jazz clarinetists in recordings from the 1920s to the 1940s. Though the clarinet was to some extent eclipsed in small group sessions in later years by the saxophone, there were some immensely talented and versatile clarinet players on the music scene, often leading groups and orchestras, and decidedly a mainstay of the music field. We hear them both as part of the performance as a whole and also in brilliantly executed solo pieces. We listen to their contribution to the rendition of a selection of jazz standards, as well, of course, to the work of all the other wonderful musicians with them in the studio!! Enjoy some classic jazz!

The 1920s and 1930s saw the creation and flourishing of many jazz and dance bands in the US and UK. These bands were home to many of great jazz musicians whose careers spanned the twentieth century and the bands were also the precursors of the Swing Era as well as the mainstream orchestras that followed it. We’ll listen today to a selection of recordings from these bands who were very popular in the US and UK, with their distinctive styles and to some excellent music from the musicians and singers in their ranks. Enjoy this tour of the early days!

Next Friday will be Canada Day and this morning, to mark this special day, we’ll hear from some wonderful Canadian artists and songwriters. We’ll be celebrating the music and art of one of the most admired Canadians in the world of music, Robert Farnon. He is particularly well known to us as a highly respected composer of orchestral and film music as well as a musician, conductor and arranger in the popular music field. And we’ll also make a visit to Montreal in the late 1950s, early 1960s to listen to some fine singers and jazz musicians who were broadcasting for the CBC back then. Happy Canada Day!

Today’s show brings us recordings from the 1930s to the 1950s. We are joined by jazz and popular singers such as Mildred Bailey, Mel Torme and Mildred Bailey, accompanied by big bands and smaller groups. Also in the line up, we’ll hear instrumentals from larger orchestras, like those led by Benny Goodman and Bob Crosby. All of our recordings feature the tremendous talent that was around at the time, and those wonderful songs from the great songwriters of the century!

Today we are celebrating la Fête Nationale de la France, which takes place on Thursday. It’s the French national holiday, also known as le quatorze juillet, which is celebrated on 14 July each year. This is an opportunity for us to reflect on the huge contribution made to popular music culture by French singers, musicians and songwriters during the period from the 1930s through to the 1960s. Enjoy their lovely and distinctive sounds and styles, so evocative of France and its music, as it continues to delight us today!

This morning we’re going to celebrate the work of the great songwriters and the very talented singers and musicians from the first part of the twentieth century. We’ll be listening to some lovely recordings of some very nice songs, which is what we do every Sunday morning, and today we’ll hear those songs again, not once, but twice. We have six songs in our line up, and two recordings of
each by different artists. It isn’t really a competition to see which ones are better. To be
honest, I can’t choose between them, and each one is terrific in its own right. But it does
give us a taste of the wonderful art of the great songwriters, and how many different ways there
were to perform and sing them. And of course, how very talented the performers were.

Today we’ll be listening to a selection of recordings made in the 1940s and 1950s for the Capitol Record label. This was a recording company set up in 1942 by singer-songwriter Johnny Mercer which went on to become one of the leading record labels in the music field. In the 40s and 50s it featured most of the big names in jazz and popular music. Johnny Mercer, who was an experienced songwriter, and a singer with a number of records to his name, was particularly qualified to run the company and invite leading artists to its recording studios. The first recording session took place in April 1942, and the label opened its first office in June of that year. On July 1, Capitol Records released its first nine records, and went on from there to become one of the leading record labels in the world. We listen today to recordings from artists like Nat King Cole, Frank Sinatra, Margaret Whiting and some of the many jazz groups that passed through its studios in its first two decades.

This is the weekend that Canadians traditionally mark as Victoria Day, and for us it’s an opportunity to reflect on the contribution made to popular culture by those with ties to Britain. On today’s show we celebrate the British influence in the jazz and popular music culture during our time period. We listen to recordings made in the UK from the 1920s through to to 1940s by some of the wonderful artists who flourished there at that time. Featured today are dance bands that music fans listened and danced to, with their musicians and vocalists, as well as jazz groups inspired by styles from America. Enjoy the sound all over again!

Today’s show begins and concludes with the fabulous Count Basie band. The orchestra flourished on the music scene for decades, led by one of the great jazz pianists of the era. They are featured today in our celebration of big bands in recordings from the 1930s and 1940s, which takes us through the Swing Era and then beyond. The orchestras were jam packed with immensely talented musicians, and were frequently joined by some fine vocalists. In addition to Jimmy Rushing, singing with the Basie band, we hear Doris Day and Helen Forrest just as they were starting out on very successful solo careers, as well as a young Anita O’Day. And enjoy some very smooth instrumental pieces from, among others, Billy Butterfield and Woody Herman.

Today’s show takes us back to the 1920s and early 1930s to listen to recordings from jazz artists and dance bands that flourished at the time. We hear Billie Holiday’s first recording from 1933, the start of an amazing career. Benny Goodman and friends join us in a jam session from 1928, and we hear crooner Russ Columbo from 1931 singing his own composition “Prisoner of Love”. In a rare recording from 1932, a young Bing Crosby brings us St Louis Blues, accompanied by the Duke Ellington orchestra. And we hear Frankie Trumbauer’s classic rendition of Hoagy Carmichael’s “Riverboat Shuffle” featuring the cornet of Bix Beiderbecke and the clarinet of Don Murray. Classic jazz!

Today is the first Sunday in May and it’s also the day in the year that we celebrate the birthday of a particular performer, one of the most successful, influential and loved in the popular music field, and that is of course, Bing Crosby. Bing was born May 3, 1903, and once again, we’re going to have our own birthday party for Bing and enjoy a few selections of music from the immense repertoire of recordings he made. He had an amazing voice, a rich warm baritone that had an intimacy and directness remarkable for its tone, range and accuracy. He is considered to have been the most popular and influential media star of the first half of the 20th century, including an extensive and varied career in film, becoming one of the most popular and successful movie stars of the twentieth century. And it is his songs on the silver screen that we’ll celebrate today, selections from a movie career that began in 1930 and lasted into the 1970s.

Charlie Haden was one of the most innovative bassists in jazz. He is featured on two tracks from his Private Collection.Canadian pianist Renee Rosmnes is also featured on three selections from her recording, beloved of the sky. I was a teenager when I fell in love with art pepper’s lovely sax playing. One of his finest recordings including a stellar group of musicians, gettin’ together is also featured along with the great sax player jim pepper, and pianist joachim kuhn.
