Today we listen to a selection of small jazz groups and fine voices in recordings from 1931 through to 1956. The Bobcats, a group carved out of the fine Bob Crosby orchestra start us off with “Washington and Lee Swing”, and we hear as well the brilliant combination of Sidney Bechet and Jonah Jones on the classic number “Sweet Georgia Brown”. Among our superb voices today we hear from Buddy Clark, Margaret Whiting and Vic Damone, all noted for their rich warm tones and superb lyrical delivery. Robert Farnon brings us one of his customary exquisite arrangements in the 1949 recording of “You’d be Hard to Replace”. And also from the UK we’re joined by Ray Noble and his New Mayfair Dance Orchestra with singer Al Bowlly in their 1931 version of “Time on My Hands”.
